New Website for Merchiston

Merchiston is pleased to announce the launch of a new website today which has been designed around the School’s varied audiences and is intended to be contemporary and easy to use. Merchiston’s previous website contained a huge quantity of information and the School is confident that the new website provides all of that information in a more effective way.  In addition to a complete redesign, it has a number of new interactive features including a full School calendar which is extremely helpful to current parents.  The website will continually be developed as new technologies become available in the marketplace.

Merchiston Pupil Earns Place on British Physics Olympiad Team

Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh is delighted that one of their pupils, John Wu in Upper Sixth Form, has been selected this week to be part of the British Physics Olympiad Team which will compete in the 42nd International Physics Olympiad.  John’s achievement is testament to a thriving Physics department at Merchiston.

The British Physics Olympiad Committee produces a number of different competition papers for students who study Physics and enjoy a challenge.  In all of the papers a Bronze award is roughly equivalent to an A or A* grade. The British Physics Olympiad paper for Merchiston’s Upper Sixth students attracted over 1700 entries nationally.  From these, 98 Gold awards were presented along with 205 Silver awards.  John achieved one of the Gold awards and was placed in the top 50 pupils nationally and was invited to Oxford for a training camp in the Easter holidays.  Two other pupils, Benny and Sam also achieved Gold and Silver awards respectively. In the AS Physics Competition Duncan was awarded Gold and eleven pupils all received Silver awards. William achieved a Gold Award in the GCSE Physics Challenge and Joseph and Jonny both achieved Silver Awards.

John has also been jointly awarded the prestigious NPL theoretical prize.  He will now attend the annual International Physics Olympian Competition for secondary school pupils in Bangkok, Thailand in July.  John has an offer to study Natural Science at Trinity College, Cambridge after leaving Merchiston.
